What is Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy?

DPN is nerve damage in the hands and feet caused by diabetes. High blood sugar and fat levels related to diabetes can damage your nerves over time. Symptoms can include pain, burning, tingling, and numbness.

Clinical Trial Details

The new drug being studied resembles a tea used to treat pain in a Siberian village. This clinical trial tests its safety and effectiveness for treating pain associated with DPN. You may be eligible to join the study if you have moderate to severe symptoms from diagnosed DPN and one of the study sites is convenient for you. You would make seven in-person visits and one virtual visit during up to 17 weeks.

  • What is a clinical trial?

    A clinical trial is a research study to test a new medical treatment in people. The objective is to learn if a new treatment is safe and effective. New treatments can be a new drug, diet, device (e.g. pacemaker), advice, or other therapy. Sometimes, a new treatment is compared to those that already exist.

  • What is the treatment in this study?

    This study drug, “NRD135S.E1,” resembles a tea used to treat pain in a Siberian village.

  • What would I need to do?

    You will make up to 7 in person and 2 virtual visits during the approximately 25-week study. You will be expected to take the study drug once each day and report your pain and medicine use on a smartphone or iPad once daily. We will lend you a device if you don’t have one. You will wear an actigraphy watch during parts of the study.

  • Is there compensation?

    Yes, you would receive compensation for your time and effort attending study visits.

  • Who will see my information?

    If you complete the eligibility survey, your information will only be shared with members of the local study team. We do not share your information with any other third party without your permission except as required by law.

  • How will I know if I am eligible to join the study?

    You may be eligible if you:
    o Are at least 18 years of age
    o Are diagnosed with diabetes
    o Have moderate or severe pain from DPN
    o If you are a female of child-bearing potential (who can have children) you are willing to use 2 kinds of birth control during the study.

The Early Phase Pain Investigation Clinical Network (EPPIC-Net) is funded by the Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative®. EPPIC-Net studies how to improve treatment of acute and chronic pain. This clinical trial has the potential to improve the lives of people living with pain due to DPN.
